Entanglement in fishing gear is one of the leading causes of death for marine mammals worldwide and threatens numerous animals in El Gouna/Hurghada as well. Researchers from the Dolphin Watch Alliance recently spotted five dolphins with injuries caused by fishing lines. Two of these animals were seen trying to free themselves from lines wrapped around their tails by rubbing against boat mooring lines.
This situation highlights the serious problem of ghost nets and harmful fishing practices, which endanger not only dolphins but also other marine animals such as turtles and sharks. There is an urgent need to improve fishing methods and waste management to reduce unintended harm to marine fauna and protect the biodiversity of our oceans.
