In early May, we received the first video footage of an injured dolphin. He was often spotted around Shaab El Erg, also known as Dolphin House. While he sometimes swam alone, he would join a group for a few hours before breaking off again, likely due to a lack of energy. The group he was swimming with gave us our first clue that the injured dolphin might be Samih, as the Samih we knew was notably absent from his group.
Shaab El Erg is a perfect spot for injured dolphins seeking refuge within the reef. This is why it’s crucial to follow the code of conduct while swimming or diving here, to ensure we disturb them as little as possible.
Usually, we rely on dorsal fin pictures for dolphin ID Sometimes, we capture fluke photos or other body parts that peek above the water. Traditionally, these photos are taken from boats, so we only see what’s above the surface. But here in Egypt, we’re incredibly lucky to snap underwater shots too! This means we can identify dolphins by their unique markings, spots, and scratches all over their bodies.
The breakthrough in identifying Samih came from underwater footage. Thanks to our extensive catalogue of dolphin images, we matched his unique spots and scratches. Without these underwater photos, identifying Samih would have been impossible.
We’re happy to share that Samih’s injuries have almost completely healed. He’s a very friendly and curious dolphin.
