In the spring of 2022, skin lesions were observed in young calves of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins. These lesions, likely caused by the fungus «Lacazia loboi», primarily appear on their dorsal fins and on the tips of their mouths. Affected calves, such as Farida and Lia, exhibit typical symptoms of a «Lobomycosis-like disease».
Investigations are ongoing, but it is suspected that a weakened immune system and proximity to polluted water may promote the disease. Young dolphins are particularly vulnerable, as they only begin rubbing against corals and sponges after about a year and a half, which may contribute to the skin issues being observed.
The Dolphin Watch Alliance is working intensively to study the exact cause and spread of these diseases in order to develop appropriate protective measures for the affected young animals.
